What is a price book
What is a price book
A price book is an object that enables products in Salesforce to be allocated a dollar value. In addition, price books also determine what product are available to sell.
When a product is added to Sales Force, that product does not have a dollar value. This means, after the product is created it must be allocated to a price book and a value. A product can and will apply to multiple price books.
There are different categories of price books that relate to pricing strategies necessary within St john. These categories, will vary from state to state, however it is reasonable to assume most states have something akin to: Standard, 5% discount, 10% discount, and 20% discount packs. Specific names may vary.
For clarity – Non-standard price books apply to events and warehouse products only. Training does not integrate with the non-standard price books, please refer to Special Pricing for more information.
In South Australia, products should never be manually added to the standard price book, instead they need to be created and managed from within MYOBA. (National created Training notwithstanding)
What products are available in each price book
Not all products are necessarily available in every price book. This is typically a deliberate decision made by managers.
In the event a product is not available in the price book you are attempting to use, you will have two options.
- Choose a different price book
- Request someone with the authority to add that product to the price book
Typically, we recommend adding all products to all price books, however using the standard price instead of a discounted rate if this product should not be discounted.
Selecting price books
When selecting a price book for an opportunity, care must be taken to ensure you select the most appropriate option. Otherwise particular products may be not available to quote on within a particular price book, or pricing will be incorrect.
Standard Price books include:
South Australia: St John 2020 – SA
Why have multiple price books?
St John may decide to sell a product at different prices. For example, a medium leisure first-aid kit, will be available to sell at different prices. The price for this First-Aid kit may be different for sales in the warehouse, at events and from a commercial training course.
Alternatively, we may have a contract with an organisation with fixed pricing of products.
